Tips for Packing Valuables & Collectibles

Arriving at your new home only to discover a family heirloom or expensive souvenir broke in transit can be heartbreaking. When you pack paintings, vases, dishes, etc. you have to take extra care to protect and preserve them. Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you box up precious belongings.

  • Pack valuables first. Packing these items early on can help make sure they get packed properly. We tend to pack less carefully when we’re packing last minute, so pack your most precious possessions first and your least precious possessions last.
  • Don’t underestimate the importance of marking boxes that contain valuables “fragile,” “handle with care,” and “do not stack.” You should also write on the outside of a box what valuable items are inside. Keeping an inventory on a separate sheet of paper or your phone could be helpful as well, to make sure nothing gets lost in transit.
  • Keep valuable and collectible items away from children and pets. Sometimes in the process of packing, we start packing a box and leave it for a period of time to do something else. Do not do this with boxes of valuables. Make sure they remain out of reach of little hands and paws.
