How to Stay Organized During a Move
One of the most frustrating aspects of any move is the chaos that inevitably ensues in the most organized household. When everything is being packed up, it’s difficult to maintain some level of sanity. But with a few smart moves (pun intended), you can save yourself some frustration.
First of all, buy the necessary packing supplies (boxes, tape, markers, etc.) upfront, print out a master to do list, and create a designated area to keep it all. It could be your dining room or a spare bedroom, but having all the things you need from the very beginning in one central location creates a “packing hub” of sorts. This way, if you’re ever needing another box or some extra tape, you know exactly where to find it.
Secondly, clearly label boxes. It’s such a basic concept, yet so many people skip it because it seems unnecessary in the moment. But when you get to your new home, you’ll be so grateful for those labels! Be as detailed as you want, especially for boxes with items you’ll want to access right away like sheets, the coffee maker, and toilet paper.
Third, pack like items together. Don’t try so hard to maximize space that you end up sacrificing basic categories. Put all kitchen items in boxes together with other kitchen items, bathroom supplies in a box that only contains bathroom supplies, and so on. It’s such a hassle to unpack a “catch-all” box. The only time mixing items can be helpful is when you’re packing heavy items like books. Don’t fill an entire box with just books, it will be too heavy and the box could break. Instead, pack the bottom with books and leave enough room for a pillow to lay across the top. This way you still use the space without making the box too heavy.
